課程概述 |
We will spend about 2/3 of the class reading various texts (mainly news articles, but a few essays and literary works as well), and the remaining 1/3 practicing listening. In order to enlarge your vocabulary and to take care of the diverse interests of the students, we will read on a variety of subjects: the arts, natural science, technology, social issues, economy, etc. Photocopies of the reading materials will be handed out in class. |

課程目標 |
Through this course the teacher will urge you to re-examine the ways you learn English and the reasons you do so to better find methods that will help you improve your language abilities. In terms of achievements, you should be able to read with an eye for major ideas and to restate them in a concise form. You should also be able to understand English conversations and spoken English in other contexts ranging from classroom instructions, storytelling, radio shows, to news flashes and lectures. The teacher also hopes to renew your interest in English so that you will continue to study English on your own after your freshman year. |

課程要求 |
The teacher expects you to write 3 short essays and to do weekly listening practices and other assignments at home. You will have to take a mid-term written exam (20%), a mid-term listening exam (10%), a final written exam (20%) and a final listening exam (10%). An oral presentation and a final project under the supervision of the TA will make up 15% of your grade, while the writing and listening assignments make up another 20%. The remaining 5% of your grade depends on your attendance and participation in class activities. |
